چکیده

The May issue of the BJGP made my mouth fall open with disbelief. What was the leading article about?1 The latest NSF? The GPC resignation ballot? The Shipman inquiry? The recent spate of TB outbreaks? The RCGP’s ideas about GP specialists and intermediate care? 24/48 hour access? NICE and the relevance of its guidance to Primary Care? What to do with your free copy of Clinical Evidence? No. It was about hereditary haemochromatosis. Is it any wonder so many ordinary GPs think their College is located in another galaxy, rather than London. Get a grip.

A PCR-SSP method for detecting the Cys282Tyr mutation in the HFE gene associated with hereditary haemochromatosis.

Hereditary haemochromatosis is a common genetic disorder that causes hyperabsorption of dietary iron, leading to increased deposition and various organic diseases. Early diagnosis is important if effective treatment is to be applied and the iron overload corrected before the onset of clinical symptoms. Recently, a candidate gene has been identified in which a single point mutation shows a very ...

Hereditary haemochromatosis.

Haemochromatosis should currently refer to hereditary iron overload disorders presenting with a definite and common phenotype characterised by normal erythropoiesis, increased transferrin saturation and ferritin and primarily parenchymal iron deposition related to innate low (but normally regulated) production of the hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin. Since the discovery of the haemochromatosis ...

Prevention of organ failure in hereditary haemochromatosis.

In this editorial the dominant sites of organ manifestations in hereditary haemochromatosis are discussed as well as conditions that can occur as a result of iron-mediated manifestations: liver disease, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, and cardiomyopathy. The incidences of these organ manifestations and their well-known typical symptomatology are mentioned, in order to investigate hereditary haemo...

A PCR-SSP method for detecting the His63Asp mutation in the HFE gene associated with hereditary haemochromatosis.

Hereditary haemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disease in which there is defective regulation of iron absorption, causing gradual accumulation of excessive amounts of iron in certain organs. Recently, a candidate gene for hereditary haemochromatosis has been identified, located on the short arm of chromosome 6, telomeric to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and showing sequence ...

Hypogonadism in a patient with mild hereditary haemochromatosis.

Hypogonadism is a potential complication of haemochromatosis, usually seen in patients with severe iron overload and liver cirrhosis. We describe the diagnostic workup of a patient with an early stage of hereditary haemochromatosis, presenting with only mildly elevated liver enzymes and central hypogonadism in the absence of cirrhosis or diabetes, but with concurrent sarcoidosis.

Hereditary hyperferritinaemia-cataract syndrome and differential diagnosis of hereditary haemochromatosis.

Hereditary hyperferritinaemia-cataract syndrome (HHCS) is a rare differential diagnosis of hereditary haemochromatosis. It should be suspected in patients with raised ferritin levels, but no evidence of iron overload, and in the absence of mutations in the HFE gene. Awareness of this condition prevents unnecessary liver biopsies and allows accurate genetic counselling since HHCS is an autosomal...
